Baleària has great ambitions for the sustainability of its future fleet. This has led to the introduction of the world’s first passenger and cargo ferry powered by natural gas. An introduction that shows great reductions of CO2 and NOx emissions, erasure of sulfur and particle discharges while presenting both socially responsible and economic benefits. Ambitions, that cannot be redeemed without continuous monitoring and analysis.

Continuous emissions monitoring on board Eleanor Roosevelt

In late 2020, the world’s first ferry for passengers and cargo powered by natural gas internal combustion engines was launched. The ferry, Eleanor Roosevelt, is designed to sail by gas power which significantly reduces emissions, improves air quality, and limits greenhouse effects. Specifically, CO2 emissions are cut by 30%, NOx by 85%, and sulfur and particles are eliminated.

To analyze and monitor the achievement of these ambitions, Baleària has chosen the multi gas monitoring system from Green Instruments. Jesús Blanco, New Projects Responsible at Baleària, explains that the technical and economical features of the Green Instruments solution fits well with the Eleanor Roosevelt project. The cooperation between Baleària and Green Instruments has been facilitated by Rubeda Técnica Europea.

Monitor and analyze sustainable efficiency

The multi gas monitoring system from Green Instruments is a continuous emissions monitoring system designed to monitor a range of different gasses according to customer specifications. The system installed onboard Eleanor Roosevelt enables Baleària to monitor emissions of SO2, CO2, NOx, and O2 from the ferry. This, states Blanco, “helps Eleanor Roosevelt improve its sustainable efficiency”.

Environmental commitment for competitiveness

The use of cleaner energy, innovation, and digitalization in the fleet of Baleària has both socially responsible and economically profitable reasons. According to Jesús Blanco, the commitment to the environment is compatible with the company’s competitiveness. About Green Instruments’ role in this commitment, Blanco notes that “We have positive expectations of how Green Instruments’ solutions will help Eleanor Roosevelt to be the sustainable vessel that it is projected to be. Baleària is pretty sure that both brands working together can play their parts for sustainable sailing development”. The ferry is projected to start operation in the first quarter of 2021.
